Lighting matters! It is not only important on TV and movie sets, but also in the kitchen.
There are four basic lighting types for the kitchen. Through a simple mix-and-matching the four different lighting types, you can recreate and accentuate your kitchen design style: General Lighting, Natural lighting, Accnet lighting, and task lighting.
Indeed, if you are on a small budge, kitchen lighting is one of the most dramatic ways to transform your kitchen. Swap out the old-country style single overhead light fixture for a few well-placed projection-style light elements, and you will pleasantly surprised by the dramatic change in look and feel of your kitchen.
General Lighting
General lighting typically refers to the ceiling-mounted lights, wall-bracketed lights, and island pendant lightings. Intended for lighting up the kitchen in general, they are usually larger pieces than either accent lighting or task lighting. While general lightings are commonly incandescent or fluorescent overhead types, recent trend is toward recessed lighting.
Natural Lighting
Natural lighting creates a feeling of openness and spaciousness in the kitchen. Natural lights can be introduced into the kitchen through larger windows or skylights. And, of course, one of the best things about natural lights is that it is completely free. At the same time, however, installing larger windows and skylights is more expensive than the other three lighting options.
Accent Lighting
Accent lighting enhances the mood in the kitchen, by literally shunning a different light on fixtures in the kitchen that are not covered by general lighting. Typical examples include wall sconce or light strips. Adding accent lighting is a relatively easy and inexpensive task. While incandescent light bulbs are still the most common for accent lights, LED is becoming increasing popular.
Task Lighting
As the name implies, task lighting puts light where you need it to perform tasks, whether it be reading or food preparation. Typical examples include under-the-cabinet lights, recessed lights over a sink, and singular puck halogen lights. As with accent light, adding task lighting is a relatively easy and inexpensive task. Task lightings are usually incandescent or fluorescent.
Because of its larger size and prominence, general lighting is the most important lighting element in setting the look and feel of the kitchen. Accent and task lightings complement general lighting to strengthen the kitchen theme. IKEA, Target, and Home Depot are three store chains that carry a wide variety of all kitchen lightings.

Home remodelers and builders have experienced a boom in the demand for granite countertops in kitchens and bathrooms. The beauty and warmth of granite makes it an ideal material for aesthetic appeal in home design, and the durability and easy care of granite countertops keeps them a favorite for homeowners who are looking into the future. Though adding granite countertops to any kitchen can be quite costly, they remain the premiere choice in upscale homes, as they retain their value better than most other improvements.
Granite, like marble and other popular stones, are as old as the earth. Granite is found all over the world. As a preferred material, granite was used in the construction of temples and other public buildings in ancient societies. In the recent past many builders continued to use granite for pillars and exterior finishes. Stone suppliers didn’t begin experimenting with polished granite until 1831. The preference for polished granite began in 1851, when a finished piece of granite was displayed in London at The Great Exhibition of the Industry of all Nations. Read the rest of this entry »
Crystal like granite countertops and spa type bathrooms built with natural stone are all the rage in home interiors, but not surprisingly it will lose its investment value fast if not properly maintained.
Up to now, only ammonia based cleaners were the granite cleaning choice outside of soap and water for homeowners, regardless of the fact that these products in reality damage natural stone.
Marble Master’s stone cleaning product line safely cleans and conditions countertops, floors and wall surrounds made of granite, marble, travertine and other natural stone. For more information, visit www.marblemasteruk.com
“Ammonia-based products remove the seal of natural stone, allowing stains to penetrate the surface and set more easily,” said Edward Green, Technical Director of Marble Master. “The damage caused by these products increases the chance that the stone will have to be refurbished or replaced, which is a costly undertaking.” Read the rest of this entry »
The popularity of granite kitchen countertops has increased dramatically in recent years, with the media focus on kitchen remodeling and personal incomes rising. Originally the choice for granite countertops was limited to wealthy individuals. Today, homeowners of moderate means choose granite countertops for their durability as well as beauty. In addition to their utility and longevity, granite kitchen countertops are one of the few home improvements that maintain their value. Typically, any appliances, flooring or cabinetry decisions will only add about twenty-five percent of their retail value to the appraisal value of a home. In addition to long term value, the beauty and warmth of granite makes it an ideal material for aesthetic appeal among homeowners and interior designers.
The natural beauty of a granite kitchen countertop complements any style of cabinetry, from French country to the sleek lines of cosmopolitan styles. This ancient stone adds warmth and character to any kitchen, whether it’s a new build or a remodel. Granite is found world wide, and is available in hundreds of colors. Brown and beige tones are the most popular, as they work well with a variety of kitchen color schemes and offer a great deal of flexibility. Some granite colors exhibit “movement,” or a noticeable design within the color, while others have very small patterns. The combination of color and movement means that no two countertops look exactly alike. Read the rest of this entry »
This is a story of passion and passionate differences, experienced by couples facing the strategic and often wrenching shifts taking place on the home front. One aspires to live in a home filled with the warmth, beauty and romance of a log home, while the other agonizes over the concept.
Why are people drawn to log homes? According to surveys, nine out of 10 people who choose a log home say they made their decision because they liked its distinctive look. Given the weight of the aesthetics, why do so many couples agonize over the details?
For some, a little research can give pause. That’s how it was for John and Katherine Overbee, who had long dreamed about building a log cabin as a retirement home. “We backed off a little,” he said. “Unless you have a lot of time and money, the intricacies of solid log construction can be worrisome.” Read the rest of this entry »
All homebuyers want as much house for their money as they can get. Many buyers are looking for a larger home because they’ve outgrown their current one, and especially desire more closet and cupboard space as well as larger rooms.
Visual space makes your home appear larger by allowing the buyer’s eye to move from one side of the room to the other without interruption, giving the illusion of more space and openness. In contrast, a cluttered room stops the eye repeatedly and gives the illusion of less space.
In order to make your home appear larger, decluttering and removing unnecessary furniture is essential. The goal is to create a comforting atmosphere in which buyers can imagine their furniture and belongings easily fitting in. Once a buyer has this image in their mind, you’re one step closer to a sale!
Follow these easy tips to add space and openness:
1. Take small pictures off the walls. Small pictures break up the space of a wall and cause the buyer to stop and look at the pictures instead of allowing their eyes to see the wall without interruption. Keep large pictures above areas you want to highlight, such as over the bed, fireplace or sofa.
