People around the world are increasingly aware of environmental issues,
but an army of the expansion in question “citizens of the earth” are to
extend the concepts of “eco-friendly ‘,’ sustainable ‘,’ green ‘and’
organic ‘from their interior decoration.
Thousands of
homeowners and apartment residents, with the help of prospective
architects, interior designers and manufacturers of products, are doing
something about toxic chemicals, emissions of greenhouse gases, and on
consuming non-renewable resources.
Fortunately, it does not
require a lot of cash, brain power or special education to join the
movement decoration which is determined to make a difference. And do
not forget that eco-friendly decor is simple for both the environment
and your family health.
Where do you start? The first thing
to do is take stock. According to Josh Dorfman, ‘green’ entrepreneur
and author of The Lazy Environmentalist, from the green on three key
areas: energy and water conservation, indoor air quality and materials
- and anyone can be affected by decorating choice.
As the
old standbys like turning off lights and fixing dripping faucets,
kitchen and bathroom manufacturers now offer beautifully designed water
and energy efficient appliances and materials that directly address
energy and conservation of water. You can also switch to
energy-efficient light bulbs wherever you can.
Silent and
attractive air purifiers help eliminate unhealthy pollutants.
Insalubres but also the air pollution comes from household chemicals -
cleaning products, air fresheners, even your laundry. There are dozens
of natural and organic alternatives now available to improve indoor air
quality.
Even if you can not choose the materials that were
used in your house under construction, which makes eco-friendly design

as flooring, above, carpeting, curtains and upholstery, even your bed
and paint on your walls all factors that contribute to global warming
and the depletion of resources in the way they are manufactured, or how
they are eliminated when we are at their disposal. Look for
“sustainable” or “green” manufacturers before buying.
Equally important, many chemicals incorporated into products decoration
contribute to chronic lung problems, eczema, headaches and a host of
other ailments. Furniture, beds, flooring and accessories made from
sustainable non-toxic materials such as towels “green” cotton or other
organic fibres, or by using latex beds, cotton and wool instead
synthetic materials, are a major step in eco - friendly home décor.
An excellent example of a “green” choice of decorative flooring is
FLOR, including carpet tiles are manufactured products wherever
possible recycled and renewable raw materials using renewable energy
sources and technologies. Not only can you custom-design your own
flooring - wall-to-wall or simply an area rug - using FLOR carpet
tiles, the company actually pays to have former FLOR carpet tiles

landfills. Eco-friendly decor is good for you and the environment. The

From armoires to wooden figurines to headboards and accent mirrors, home furnishings are canvases for artists around the world. Adorned with floral patterns, Asian motifs and other ethnic-inspired designs, hand-painted furniture and accessories are the must-have items of the season. “Hand-painted home furnishings are taking center stage in the home, adding a world-inspired flare and style to the overall décor,” says Gary Babcock, vice president of merchandising and fashion at Arhaus Furniture, a 23-store lifestyle retailer of fine home furnishings.
Worldly influences
Hundreds of years ago, Egyptian artisans embellished everything from tables to pottery with colorful motifs to pass on ancient fables to future generations. “We’re seeing a resurgence of these hand-painted items as consumers look to add personal style to their home with unique pieces from around the world,” says Babcock. “They’re embracing heirlooms and other richly decorated items that they see as authentic to a certain era or culture.” Read the rest of this entry »
“Reality” shows have saturated television programming, especially in the area of home and garden design. You can “trade spaces” with a neighbor, enlist a professional to recreate a high-end designer room on a budget or secretly call in a design team to remake a room as a surprise for a loved one. This makes for compelling television watching . . . especially when the transformed spaces and the shocked reactions of the room makeover “victims” are revealed. But these reality shows are not real. They do little to showcase the benefits of working with professional interior designers who can help you “trade spaces,” “change rooms” or “design on a dime,” but better.
Although some design show hosts have a formal education and professional background in interior design, many do not. The professional design talent would be the first to tell you that the magical world of television, with its strategic editing and instant gratification, is far different from the real world of interior design where good results require careful planning, patience and expectations.
Although a design show’s budget may be $500 to $1,000, that amount doesn’t include the cost of hiring and using professional labor. These shows have designers and multiple contractors on staff who make sure the inexpensive supplies are translated into aesthetically pleasing (although not necessarily functional, practical or safe) furniture, accessories, window treatments and wallcoverings.
