Changing the locks in your home is one of the simplest home repair jobs there is. The first thing to do is decide what the lock is for. For example, if you are changing the doorknob or handle on a closet, you probably don’t even have to bother with a lock. You can just use a free through passage doorknob or handle. If you want to lock the closet because it contains valuables or dangerous materials, you can’t use this kind of doorknob.
A privacy door knob is what is usually used in bedrooms or bathrooms. They are made so that you can unlock these doors from inside the room. Read the rest of this entry »

Kitchen drawer pulls can have a powerful effect on the appearance of a working kitchen. You might not think of it because your cabinet drawers come with handles already. However, you can enhance the theme of the décor subtly by using kitchen hardware masterfully.
When you walk into a room for the first time, you may not consciously notice details like drawer knobs. If someone asked you what they were like, you may not be able to answer. Yet, they create an ambience that is unique to the kitchen. You may not know what you liked or did not like, but there will be either a feeling of harmony or a nagging sense of wrongness. The kitchen cabinet knobs make that big of a difference. Read the rest of this entry »
A screened porch is a safe haven for many people during the summer. It is shady, often cooler than the inside of the house and gives people the opportunity to sit outside in the fresh air without having to worry about being inundated by bugs or other creatures. People are especially grateful for the screens on their porches when they want to eat outside. There is nothing worse than having some bug land right in the middle of your dinner.
There are, of course, different types of porch screens. There are two basic varieties: the kind that will keep bugs out and the kind that will keep larger creatures out.

The most important aspect of cooking is to know what you’re making and where to find the tools to get the job accomplished. The best way to know what you’re making is to have a good menu on hand. If you don’t have a collection of your own recipes, ask a few friends to give you their favorite family-friendly recipes and include your favorite meals along with those. You should be ready to go.
If you have the opposite problem of having too many recipes, just choose 20 of your favorites and put the rest away for now. I suggest using a folder or 3 ring binder with sheet protector pages in it to store your favorite recipes. If your recipes are on cards you can tape several recipes to a piece of paper and slide the piece of paper into your sheet protector pages. Read the rest of this entry »
Installing a new door can make a big difference to the interior or the exterior of a home. If you think that painting your existing door will not improve the door enough for you, then a new door is a wise investment. Many people also replace their doors when they are drafty, badly insulated, or do not fit properly into the door frame. A high quality new door can lower the costs of heating or cooling your home because it probably has better insulation than your old door. Vintage doors are often made of cheap materials like plywood, while today’s doors are better made, although you may end up paying more dearly for them. For instance you can pay five hundred dollars for a new front door, but the door is usually reinforced with metal for safety reasons.
The three kinds of doors are interior doors (which more often than not do not have locks on them), entry doors (extremely sturdy doors with safety measures to keep out burglars and other undesirables), and combination doors such as storm or screen doors. Installing doors is a project that you can probably do by yourself, although sometimes it is a two-person job if the door is especially heavy. Usually one person needs to hold the door up while the second person takes it off its hinges. Read the rest of this entry »
One key to saving time in the kitchen is having the right tools and knowing where to find them. When you have your kitchen grouped into centers (like a baking center, cookware center and tableware center), you can work in the area you need to work in and have everything you need at your fingertips.
Here are the tools I can’t live without:
Good sharp knives - My favorite knives are Cutco. They cut better than any knife that I have used and I have never had to sharpen them. Good sharp knives will save you lots of time in the kitchen. Read the rest of this entry »
One of the rooms in the home that may be most challenging to decorate is the bathroom. Since things in this area are exposed to considerable humidity from bathing, furnishings and bathroom window treatments may need to be somewhat different than those in other rooms.
Bathroom window privacy is another issue that is compelling since rather intimate activities in a state of undress are common in a bathroom. At the same time, most people want a lot of light in the area, preferably natural light. So, window coverings for bathrooms need to meet both of these needs, privacy and light. If you think about it, the door knob began the whole movement towards security and safety in the home. Before the door knob, doors would just push open when someone wanted to get inside or go out. Then along came the door knob. It was a great way to keep a door from opening accidentally. A door knob also offered a side benefit of keeping the elements out of the house. Imagine how things would be in a storm without a door knob. Rain and wind would rush in every time.
Once the door knob was in place, there were further advances to this invention. Soon a lock would be added to a door. That made not only a way to keep the door from accidentally opening, but also a way to intentionally keep people out.

Any American watching old television sitcoms during the Fifties would know what the retro look is like, especially in the kitchen. For today, the same retro kitchen design has been given a bit of a facelift, provided there are a few good old American items and furnishings still available. All it takes is a little of that American know-how.
There is no such thing as recycled in a sense, but anything that has a lime green color is pretty much pushing it already. Of course it depends on the homeowner’s preference, but with some materials that are no longer available, there is always the present compromise. Wood is also a popular way to bring back the retro look, as designers of the past have been experimenting on a more space saving way to design a great kitchen with all the bells and whistles. As for flooring, it can be anything from linoleum, wood, or even tiles for that matter as long as there is a certain pattern like the diners with the black and white checkered prints.
Size does matter in an American retro kitchen design, as it is the dining area from the usual dining area where guests or occasions are involved. But with careful floor planning, any small space can still have that retro feel in the kitchen.
Some products in the market like toasters and blenders still come in its stainless steel variety and a much better choice to begin with. The same goes for other appliances like refrigerators and stoves, but would be better to use what the homeowner already has in his kitchen. There is nothing modular or space saving in a way, but it’s all about the furnishings at this point.
There are still those who have some chrome and vinyl dinettes available in the market, and for some in a garage sale somewhere. Glass top tables were also fashionable during that time, and can be fabricated given to a professional glass maker and the price. To add up with a more retro feel, hanging pictures of that era (including Elvis Presley) or newspaper clippings of the Apollo space shuttle launch would spruce up the kitchen even more.
